Recommended Sharia laws, on the other hand, are neither compulsory nor forbidden but are encouraged duties, which might be neglected without any punishment. For instance, a Muslim missing congregational prayer on Friday is discouraged but not punishable. Finally, forbidden Sharia laws outline sinful actions, which are prohibited regardless of the intentions and are stipulated in the sacred books. For instance, the Quran forbids the use of intoxicants and games of chance since their negative effects outweigh any possible benefits. All the discussed acts of Sharia law are meant to improve the religious and spiritual lives of Muslims.
