Plagiarism has attracted the attention of schools and educators as a result of the threat it poses to the quality of education and the integrity of learners. Different citation styles such as MLA and APA are recommended. Any borrowed work should be cited appropriately. 

Current Developments in Plagiarism 

Over the years schools and educators have come up with new developments and recommendations to assist students in avoiding plagiarism. For instance, various citation styles have been proposed. The most common styles according to University of Washington (2021) are MLA, APA, and Chicago. APA (American Psychology Association) is mostly used in science subjects. On the other hand, MLA (Modern Language Association) is recommended in the literature. Chicago is mostly used in humanities. However, the formatting may vary from one institution to the other depending on the needs and objectives of both educators and Learners.

There are also variants to plagiarism that make it necessary for learners to pay special attention. Merely forgetting to cite properly is not an excuse and might land a student in trouble. The change of a few words in a sentence and the use of online spinning tools also amounts to plagiarism. Some institutions also discourage the use of block quotations and restrict the percentage of the paper that can contain direct quotations. There is also internal plagiarism where a student copies one section of the paper and pastes it on another section. Students should be aware of these new developments in plagiarism in an order to avoid being penalized. 

Effects of Plagiarism on Academic Skills

Plagiarism has serious consequences on the academic skills of students. Instead of spending time doing research, a student will look for already written papers online. Such a tendency encourages laziness and prevents the student from developing effective research skills. Plagiarism also imparts in the student unethical behavior that can significantly affect their integrity. A student that used to steal the works of research of others will most likely engage in exam and other academic irregularities. 

Plagiarism also affects the process of learning and the capacity of the student to synthesize information and engage in critical thinking. The essence of learning is to allow students to partake in innovation and development of ideas. Plagiarism can cripple education and affect technological and intellectual development.
