The ideologies of rehabilitative penal growth between 1950 and 1970s showcased rapid growth that came from colonial activities especially in Africa. The authorities manning prisons in the post-colonial period did a wonderful job in distributing economic development throughout cultures in Africa enabling international participation since various important positions were occupied by African leaders and hooked crime rates.

However, there was a time when Africans became social outcasts probing an an increase in ill activities which led to more prisons. Currently, with gang culture for instance, in South Africa common abuses through sex, overcrowding, and the improved rate of incarceration have become major trends affecting prisons in countries like South Africa. The growth of gang culture has led to the current day high rates of incarceration through crime.
