We can define competence in sustainability as networks of knowledge, abilities, and approaches that can allow successful stint and performance on problem-solving related to real-world sustainability problems, challenges, and opportunities. I can use this to teaching on the environmental topic by being aware of students' overload. The eloquence of critical and global environmental crises can overwhelm students when they study the immensity of the problems humanity face and the challenges involved in coping with them.  These feelings of emotional overload can cause students to feel undone and even resentful, which can interrupt the learning process. I would embrace inter-disciplinary through the perception of issues related to environmental sustainability necessarily involves contributions from a wide class of methods throughout the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
