Plants are referred to as producers because they make their own food through a process known as photosynthesis. During the process of photosynthesis, plants convert energy from the sun to transform water as well as carbon dioxide into glucose through photovoltaic cells popularly known for their capacity to convert solar energy. The glucose produced is subsequently utilized by plants for energy and the production of other substances such as starch and cellulose. Cellulose is essential in building plants cell walls. Conversely, starch is normally stored in the seeds and other parts of the plant as a source of food. This explains why some foods we consumer such as rice and other cereals are stuffed with starch. Moreover, the distinct coloring pigment in plants known as chlorophyll is similarly used in the photosynthesis process to absorb the suns energy converting it to chemical energy besides giving plants their various colors.
