Substance abuse is a major concern in the pacific islands with cannabis being the most common and widespread illicit drug substance used in the region. Smuggling into and thru the pacific of methamphetamine and other illicit drug is one the crimes arising due to drug trafficking. Substance abuse is likely to cause many harmful effects as there is no overall regional or country based illicit drug policy to limit the existence of illicit drugs and their use. Transnational organized groups also appear to be targeting the pacific the trafficking of illicit drugs. The pacific is mainly known to be trans-shipment point for drugs entering the region with most drug traffickers changing routes and tactics so as to exploit the vulnerable points along the borders
