Question #80234
In his 2006 book, Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers. How does Appiah’s anecdote of the medical missionary speak to the need for flexibility in the promotion of universal values? Summarize the anecdote and analyze its importance to his argument
Expert's answer

The anecdote about the medical missionary is about numerous children who died because of the water that looked clear but was full of invisible creatures, according to a missionary who observed that horror. Finally, she tried to save those children and told their parents to boil the water before giving it to their children. And, just a strange story about dangerous spirits who are leaving the water during boiling made sense to those mothers feeding their children. The aforementioned Appiah’s argument is important because people may save themselves just in case they realize that viruses make them sick.
