A 3-point bending test is performed on a simply supported beam of length L=4m and of rectangular cross-section, with width b and height h.

For a central load of 10kN, draw the bending moment and shear force diagrams for the beam. Then answer the following questions about the shear force V and bending moment M.

What is the shear force in the beam at x=0.5,1.5,2.5 and 3.5m?

For an Fe-C system with 0.35 wt.% of C, identify the following.

1. Amount of Proeutectoid and Eutectoid phases.

2.Amount of total ferrite and cementite

A sheet of BCC iron 2 mm thick is exposed to a carburizing gas on one side and a

decarburizing gas on the other at 600 oC. After reaching steady state, the iron sheet is

quenched to room temperature, and the C concentrations at each side of the membrane

are 0.27 kg/m3 and 1.386 kg/m3

. Calculate the diffusion coefficient if the diffusion flux is

1.4 x 10-8

kg/m2

s.

A diffusion couple is made from nickel and iron. After 30 hours of heat treatment at 1400 K, the concentration of nickel is 3.2 wt % at a distance of 1.5 mm from interface. If an identical diffusion couple is heated at 1200 K for 30 hours, at what depth from the interface will the concentration of nickel be 3.2 wt %? The pre-exponential factor (Do) and activation energy for diffusion is 1.8 x 10-5 m2 /s and 152 kJ/mol respectively, and the surface concentration of nickel is 100 wt%. (Note that this is a non-steady state diffusion process

1. Use the Cu-Ni phase diagram.

(a) Based on the phase diagram, comment on the solubility of Cu and Ni in each other and explain your answer.

(b)What type of solid solutions are the resulting alloys? Explain your answer.

(c)For a Cu-40Ni alloy(60wt%Cu, 40wt% Ni), determine the degrees of freedom and the phase composition at

(i)1300°C

(ii)1250°C

(iii)1200°C

The Blood Bank Testing Unit.

The Blood Bank Testing Unit. This is one unit within the College Street Red Cross Blood Donor Centre.

On the day following a blood donation, the Blood Bank unit tests all blood for blood type and potential viral agents. They send the results of these tests to the Processing Office . This is indicated on the test form.

Blood units have a limited shelf life. The Blood Bank receives a list every day of those units which have exceeded their shelf life. The Blood Bank prepares refrigerated containers of these units and distributes them to the hospital vans when they arrive to pick up their supply. The Blood Bank receives a listing for each hospital and the specific units of blood to supply to the hospital from the Processing Office.

(a) Draw a context data flow diagram for the Blood Bank Testing Unit System.

(b) Draw a level 0 data flow diagram for the Blood Bank Testing Unit System.
