Small pieces of DNA can be used as evidence but they require great attention during identifying, collecting, and preserving because they can easily be contaminated. To avoid this, the following precautions should be considered;

• Wearing gloves and changing them often.

• Use of disposable equipment and if not, cleaning them thoroughly before and after handling each sample.

• Avoid touching places where you suspect DNA may exist.

• Avoid talking, sneezing and coughing over evidence (put on a face mask when examining the DNA samples).

• The evidence should be thoroughly airdried before packaging.

• The evidence should be put in new paper bags or envelopes (do not use staples).

• Plastic bags should not be used.
