Pyruvate is a very important metabolic intermediate which is made from glucose via glycolysis. In the presence of oxygen pyruvate goes into the Krebs cycle with subsequent formation of ATP. When oxygen is lacking it forms lactic acid. Pyruvate can be converted into carbohydrates via gluconeogenesis, into fatty acids through the acetyl-CoA.
