In regions of central Africa malaria is endemic. Malaria is caused by four types of human malaria parasites in the genus Plasmodium, which are carried by female Anopheles mosquitoes. However, there are over 200 species of malaria. Birds, bats, lizards and antelopes are also hosts for malaria parasites. Thus, some animal malaria parasite could have acquired the ability to cause malaria in humans through evolution
