Sucrose and maltose are disaccharides. If both maltose and sucrose are used by yeasts during respiration, it does not indicate that yeasts do not hydrolyse disaccharides. Other control (i.e., glucose or absence of any carbohydrate) should be used as positive and negative controls of the experiment. As a result, the second statement might be wrong.
