Phosphorylated eIF2 is a dominant inhibitor of the guanine nucleotide exchange factor eIF2B and prevents the recycling of eIF2 during protein synthesis. Increased phosphorylation of eIF2 and inhibition of eIF2B activity decreased the overall rate of protein synthesis. In contrast, eIF2 dephosphorylation activates eIF2B and enhances protein synthesis.
