In prokaryotic cells, there is only one origin of replication that occurs in two opposing directions at the same time. Prokaryotic cells possess one or two types of polymerases. Eukaryotic cells have multiple points of origin and use unidirectional replication. Eukaryotes have four or more types of polymerases. The short replication in prokaryotes occurs almost continuously, whereas eukaryotic cells undergo DNA replication during the S-phase of the cell cycle.
