The term “middle passage” refers to the fact that the slave trade was part of a three-legged process:

  1. Products from Europe were shipped to Africa, and used to purchase captured Africans who are sold into slavery.
  2. Slaves are shipped from West Africa to the West Indies, and sold for raw material.
  3. The raw material from the West Indies were shipped back to Europe, to made into products.

The term “second middle passage” refers to the mass movement of slaves from outside the American South to the south, to support the explosive growth of the cotton industry
