From the mid-to-late 1950s to 1975, Africa was decolonized, with colonial governments making the transition to independent states, resulting in abrupt and radical regime changes across the continent. The Algerian War in French Algeria, the Angolan War of Independence in Portuguese Angola, the Congo Crisis in Belgian Congo, the Mau Mau Uprising in British Kenya, and the Nigerian Civil War in the secessionist state of Nigeria were all examples of a disorganized process marred by violence, political turmoil, widespread unrest, and organized revolts in both northern and sub-Saharan Africa.Following WWII, rapid decolonisation swept the African continent, with many territories gaining independence from European colonialism.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt of the United States and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill met in August 1941 to discuss their postwar objectives. They signed the Atlantic Charter at that meeting, promising to "respect the right of all peoples to choose the form of government in which they will live; and they wish to see sovereign rights and self-government restored to all who have been forcefully stripped of them." As nationalism gained traction after WWII, this agreement became a turning stone for independence.

European powers, burdened by postwar debt, could no longer afford the money needed to retain control of their African colonies. African nationalists were able to negotiate decolonization easily and with little casualties as a result of this. However, the battle for independence in some regions resulted in high death tolls.
