Importance of early modern period in the history of delhi
Delhi is one of the greatest historical significance as an important commercial, transport, and cultural hub, as well as the political center of India. According to legend, the city was named for Raja Dhilu, a king who reigned in the region in the 1st century. Delhi became an important city only in the twelfth century. It first became the capital of a kingdom under the Tomara Rajputs, who were defeated in the middle of the twelfth century by the Chauhans of Ajmer. Similarly, city’s historical importance in the view of the economy as being fundamentally driven forward by the rise of a coastal polity, expanding inwards from Bombay, Madras, and Calcutta, sits awkwardly with his repeated claim that colonialism was of little significance for Indian economic history
