The space race was a competition that was informal in the 20th century between the United States and the Soviet Union who were cold war rivals. The origin of the race was from the two nation’s nuclear arms race as ballistic missiles after the Second World War. For national security, it was viewed as a necessary advantage to first achieve the spaceflight milestone. It is in 1955 that the competition began when the Soviet Union responded by claiming it had the intention of also launching satellites that were artificial to space after the United States made a similar claim. In 1957, the Soviet Union identified itself as the first to reach space after the successful orbiting of Sputnik 1. Hence the identity of Sputnik is the first satellite to orbit space.
