In 1066, shortly after the invasion of Norman and the conquest of England, the Domesday survey was conducted as commissioned by William. This survey was recorded in the Domesday Book. William the Conqueror needed to raise the taxes in order to contain the expenses of his army. The domes day survey was conducted with an aim of assessing the state of wealth possessed by his subjects across the land (Higham, 1993).

The survey covered all of England and collected data on revenue and wealth information of every individual. In doing this, William was able to know the wealth of his subjects and therefore raise the taxes to a value that would help contain his army. I agree with the statement since after the survey, William was able to raise the tax. William’s interest was to know the level of wealth so that he could raise the taxes imposed on the citizens and improve his army.
