An empire is ruled by a single leader or sometimes minor groups of people; they have authority over a state or many states. The ruling leaders are referred to as emperors. Empires vary in size, which explains that it is not a must that empires should be larger. Famous empires that are well known include the Roman empire, the British empire, and the Holy Roman empire.
