in his speech, President Carter urged the citizens to do whatever they can to reduce their energy usage whatever means possible. He argued that oil intake around the would increase and the US needed to brace itself for the worst. His proposed measures were criticized as impractical. Instead, the federal government opted to deregulate energy and increase freedom to market incentives to cushion the country against any shortages.
