The reason for the development of nuclear weapons in Pakistan was the Indo-Pakistan war in the early 1970s. Already during this war, latent nuclear weapons research began. Pakistan was able to obtain the equipment and technology necessary for the development due to the weak control of Western exports, the implementation of civilian energy and scientific programs, and with the support of China government. The bulk of nuclear weapons research in Pakistan was aimed at enriching uranium. A small part of the research was to study the production and separation of plutonium. In 1978, France abandoned the construction of a uranium enrichment plant in Pakistan, but by that time a large plant with the use of concentrating centrifuges had already been built in Kahuta. Equipment for the installation was purchased with the help of Libyan funds through fictitious European and North American companies. According to experts, the plant in Kahuta is the source of all or nearly all nuclear material for the Pakistani weapons program.
