From the play, A Smart Alec and Two Idiots Walk Into A Closet by Sarah Tarrant, who was the intended audience?
This is a student’s comedy play. There are three characters in the play: Shawn, Connie, and Lewis. Shawn is very calm through the whole period they are locked up in the janitor’s room and is the one referred to as the ‘smart Alec’. Connie and Lewis are very agitated and are in constant unrest about the whole situation. These two Characters are referred to by the author as the two idiots (Demmer Dewan 2019). The play was intended for teenagers and young adults. Being locked up in a room with no one to help them is used as a symbolic feature that can be observed in real-life situations. Many teenagers and young adults find themselves in situations that they cannot come out of. Despite their numerous efforts to overcome the situation, they are still unable to come out of it. These teenagers and young adults become prisoners in their own lives. They are all aware of the difficulties they are facing, however, they still cannot comprehend how they got to such extreme situations in their lives and there is no one to help them other than themselves. Some of these people ‘teenagers and young adults’ adapt well when faced with such difficult situations while others just can’t handle being in such situations and they require help from other people to reassure them that despite the difficulties, there is still a chance of overcoming that menace.
