While travelling at night, the speaker in Travelling Through the Dark finds a dead doe which died after colliding with a vehicle. The speaker’s moral dilemma reflects earlier in the poem when he says, “That road is narrow, to swerve might make more dead…” Here, the narrator must consider whether the human life is more important than an animal’s life. his dilemma in decision-making is also evident when he discovers that the animal is pregnant. He must decide whether or not to roll the deer to the canyon. He says, “I thought hard for us all…,” and finally rolls the doe into the canyon. Overall, the speaker the speaker has to swerve both the direction of his car and his idea. In the 4th line, he finds it difficult to swerve the vehicle’s direction because it would worsen the deer’s condition. However, in line 17, he changes his idea and pushes the animal into the river regardless of the fawn’s fate.
