A solution is to be concentrated from 10 to 50 percent solids in a single effect evaporator. Steam is available at a gauge pressure of 3 bar with reference to atmospheric pressure of 1 bar. A pressure of 0.5 bar absolute is maintained in the vapor space. The feed rate to the evaporator is 10,000 kg/hr at 30oC. The specific heat and latent heat of evaporation of feed solution are equivalent to that of water. The overall heat transfer coefficient is 1000 W/(m2-K). The solution has a negligible elevation in boiling point and heat of dilution. Calculate steam consumption and steam economy? -
