Some compounds contain both ionic and covalent bonds. These compounds contain polyatomic ions. Many of these compounds contain a metal, a nonmetal and also hydrogen. However, other examples contain a metal joined via an ionic bond to covalently bonded nonmetals. Here are examples of compounds that exhibit both types of chemical bonding: NaNO3, (NH4)S, Ba(CN)2, CaCO3, NH4Cl. Some of the physical properties can be indicated from NH4Cl example: it is a white powder; its taste is salty; it has no odor; it doesnt melt, but does sublime; and it is easily dissolvable in water, but insoluble in acetone.
