Answer to Question #41317 in Chemistry for edward

Question #41317
Dear sir
IN Potentiometric determination of hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide and mercaptans in petroleum products METROHM APPLICATION NO.135/2 e-we use Alkaline solvent for low molecular mercaptans:
2.7 g CH3COONa * 3 H2O is dissolved in 25 mL dist. water. Add 975 mL IPA as
well as 10 mL w(NH3) = 25% and mix.
• Acidic solvent for higher molecular mercaptans:
2.7 g CH3COONa * 3 H2O is dissolved in 25 mL dist. water. Add 975 mL IPA as
well as 4.6 mL glacial acetic acid and mix.
can you tell us 1)why use CH3CCOONa and why i use NaOH?
2)why i can not use one solution for high or low molecular mercaptans?
3)WHY CAN I USE CH3COOH FOR HIGHER MOLECULAR MERCAPTANS?
