Answer to Question #57956 in Inorganic Chemistry for XM

Question #57956
When heated at 500 oC in a 5-L reaction vessel, the breaking down of NOCl occurs.
2NOCl (g) ⇌ 2NO(g) + Cl2 (g)

Using Le Chatelier’s Principle, predict and explain how the equilibrium
is affected when
(i) the mixture is transferred to a 2-L reaction vessel
(ii) a catalyst is added
(iii) when more NO gas is added into the reaction vessel
(iv) Cl2 is removed from the vessel as it is formed

(i) The equilibrium will be shifted to the left (because a decrease in system volume cause increase of concentration of substances and the speed of reverse reaction will be greater than the speed of direct reaction)
(ii) The equilibrium will be shifted to the right (because the catalyst increases the rate of direct reaction)
(iii) The equilibrium will be shifted to the left (because adding of NO increases the rate of the reverse reaction)
(iv) The equilibrium will be shifted to the right (because the removing of Cl2 increases the rate of direct reaction)
