The solution of alkali metals in liquid ammonia is blue color due to the presence of ammoniated electron. An alkali metal atom readily loses the valence electron in the ammonia solution. Thus, both the electron and the cation combine with ammonia forming ammoniated electron and ammoniated cation. The ammoniated electron absorbs energy in the visible region of light and hence imparting the blue color to the solution.
