Answer to Question #53295 in General Chemistry for Joe

Question #53295
When Baking Soda and Epsom Salt are added into my water a fizz seems to take place. What elements are being created and what is the fizz coming out of the water?
Expert's answer
Baking soda and Epsom Salt are NaHCO3 and MgSO4, respectively. Thus, their interaction leads to rapid the formation of CO2 causing a fizz effect. There are no new elements being created. However, new compounds are formed:
NaHCO3 + MgSO4 + H2O → Mg(OH)2 + CO2 ↑+ NaHSO4
