Answer to Question #175817 in General Chemistry for Nicole

Question #175817

WHAT I KNOW ON SURFACE TENSION?

-Molecules into the surface of the liquid, fell a net force of attraction that pulls them back into the body of the liquid. As a result, the liquid tries to take on the shape that has the smallest possible surface area - the shape of a sphere.The magnitude of the force that controls the shape of liquid is called the surface tension. The stronger the bonds between the molecules in the liquid, the larger the surface tension.

"\\boxed\\bigstar" Surface Tension -It is defined as, the property of the surface of a liquid which allows it to

"\\bull" resist an external force,

"\\bull" due to the cohesive nature of the water molecules.

"\\bigstar" Formula

"\\boxed{\\gamma = {F\\over L}}"

"\\gamma" = surface tention

F = force

L= Length

"\\boxed\\bigstar" When starch is mixed(presence of heat) with water, the starch granules swell and burst,

"\\bull" causing them to break down and release the glucose molecules into the water.

"\\bigstar"Consequently, the starch molecules interact with more water,

"\\bull" increasing the randomness of the slution.

"\\bigstar" This process is known as gelatinization.

"\\boxed\\bigstar" If cornstarch and water mixed

mixture creates a fluid that acts more like quicksand than water

"\\bull" applying force causes it to become thicker.
