During the first days of the bacterial contamination of systemic circulation (bacterial) septicemia), non-specific immunity is activated. The process is associated with the increased expression of proinflammatory cytokines (i.e., TNF-α, IL-2, IL-6, and IFN-γ) that induce phagocytic activity, synthesis of acute phase proteins by the liver, vascular endothelial injury, activation of the coagulation system, production of lytic enzymes and reactive oxygen species by neutrophils, etc. The processes lead to the penetration of the pathogens to various tissues whereas overactivation of the immune response causes the damage of multiple organs.
