Answer to Question #22885 in Biochemistry for Amanda
Strawberry cells are octoploid(each cell contains eight sets of chromosomes),banana cells are triploid(each cell contains three sets of chromosomes). Which do you think will have more DNA- 10g of strawberry or 10g of banana I just cant figure it out
One answer logically would be the strawberries, since each cell contains more DNA. Bananas (Musa acuminata 'Cavendish') are triploid with 33 chromosomes/cell (the basic set is x = 11 chromosomes) Strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa) is octoploid with 56 chromosomes/cell (the basic set is x = 7 chromosomes). &
But what if the strawberry cells were much larger than the banana cells? Then there might be a lot fewer cells and, thus, possibly a lot less DNA. What if the banana had a lot lower water content than the strawberry? Same thing--more cells in the banana than in the strawberry. Therefore banana could have more DNA because of large number of cells.
