There are many kinds of laboratory funnels: filter funnels, dropping funnels, powder funnels, separatory funnels and others. The most often funnels are used for funneling liquids (or solids for powder funnels) from one container to another. The other function of a funnel is to realize filtration (separation of the liquid phase from the solid phase). Dropping funnels are used for adding reagents slowly (drop-wise). Separatory funnels are used in liquid-liquid extraction to separate the component of a mixture into two immiscible solvent phases of different densities.
