This is the solution of sodium hypochlorite NaClO (commonly known as bleach or
clorox).
Preparation:
Cl2 + 2NaOH = NaCl + NaClO + H2O
Sodium
hypochlorite is a strong oxidizer.
When NaClO dissolved in a solution of
water, it will slowly decompose, releasing chlorine, oxygen, and sodium
hydroxide:
4NaClO + 2H2O = 4NaOH + 2Cl2 + O2
